Burren Law School - Programme
The Burren Law School 2012
Friday May 4th to May 6th 2012"Ireland - Commemoration & Constitution"
Director : Alex White T.D.
Plans are well under way for this year’s School. The guest Director will be Alex White SC, TD. The subject for the weekend will draw on two areas of interest:
- the commencement in 2012 of a sequence of significant centenary commemorations over the next several years up to 1916
- the 75th anniversary of Bunreacht ne hEireann, and the Constitutional Convention to be established this spring to explore and report on constitutional change
The idea is to combine these themes in a way that allows us to span the period from the revolutionary years, through the enactment of the 1937 Constitution, and up to the present day. It will also facilitate a strong legal component in presentations and debates on the issue of constitutional change and reform. Historians, academics, jurists, lawyers and commentators will debate these topics, along with the usual lively participation of school participants.
Amongst those invited to speak this year are lawyer Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, Michael Morpurgo (author of ‘War Horse’), historians Professor Diarmaid Ferriter, Dr Margaret MacCurtain and Catriona Crowe, constitutional lawyer Dr Oran Doyle, and Mr Justice Gerard Hogan of the High Court.
